Upholding the Promise of JusticeThis year marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Gideon v. Wainwright. Forty years ago, Clarence Earl Gideon, a drifter with an eighth-grade education, was denied representation and convicted of petty larceny in Florida. Through his handwritten pleadings from prison, Gideon asserted his constitutional right to counsel and changed the history of the U.S. criminal justice system. The Gideon ruling, which established a constitutional right to counsel in felony cases, is considered the most significant criminal justice decision in the history of the Supreme Court.Forty years later, many challenges remain to make equal justice a reality in this nation. The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) is proud to be the oldest and largest national, nonprofit association of individuals and organizations who are meeting this challenge and upholding the promise of justice made in Gideon. NLADA is a voice for the voiceless, working to increase and expand effective legal assistance, both in criminal and civil matters, to millions of women, men and children who are denied justice every day simply because they are poor. As our pursuit of equal justice continues, outstanding individuals emerge to set an example of extraordinary dedication, achievement and leadership. As we commemorate Gideon’s monumental contribution to the constitutional mandate of our nation, NLADA proudly salutes the 2003 Exemplar Award recipients for their outstanding contributions and commitment to upholding the promise of justice.
