Defender Train the Trainers

Join the Defender Trainers Section for the Defender Train the Trainer Preconference — a two-day learning event that will model the use of adult learning principles and fully engage participants in developing and implementing more effective training programs and presentations. Using a learn by doing methodology, the Defender Train the Trainer Preconference provides an interactive experience for public defender trainers, supervisors, administrative staff and others, anyone whose job responsibilities include the development or implementation of training. Participants will attend plenary sessions including:

  • The Role of the Trainer, Adult Learning Theory and Short Attention Span;
  • Understanding and Drafting Learning Objectives for Your Training Presentation;
  • PowerPoint Overview: Using PowerPoint to Enhance Training Objectives; and
  • Using Training Programs to Define a Client-Centered, Quality Representation Public Defender Office Culture

Following each plenary session, attendees will participate in facilitated, interactive small group sessions that will provide them with a “hands-on” opportunity to apply the plenary subject matter to a training event/session they are currently planning and receive feedback from faculty and fellow participants.

From directors of organization-wide training programs to supervisors developing a one-time training for staff attorneys or administrative staff, the design and development of the training program is critical to ensuring that the program participants enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities. This pre-conference will provide the participant with valuable information and practical steps for designing a training program from beginning to end.

Attendees are required to bring a laptop computer with PowerPoint program and a proposal for a training event of any size as well as presentation/session ideas. By the end of this pre-conference, participants will be well on their way to producing a presentation that will impress their colleagues and engage their learners and developing a highly effective training event that will stand out.
