State Inspector General Finds Serious Errors in NYPD Crime Laboratory 2002
In 2007, the NYS Inspector General launched a 7 month investigation of the NYPD Crime Lab, concerning allegations that in 2002 chemists were "dry-labbing" [submitting forensic reports without actually doing the work]. The IG confirmed this and found that supervisors failed to fully investigate the problem and failed to notify prosecutors. As a result, some heads rolled and cases are being examined by prosecutors to determine what effect these improprieties had.
In April, 2007, per the NY Times, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly has ordered a shakeup of the Forensic Investigations Division and the creation of an oversight panel. |
